I write about my interests, hike to find my way, and work so I can. Find out more about me, or get in touch.
I'm a geek. I spend most of my time with my computer, an Apple Powerbook G4 (TiBook). I'm a web designer. I focus on usability and accessibility. I'm an adventurer. I'd spend the rest of my days hiking, biking, or sailing around the world if I could afford it.
I became a geek the day my Pops brought home the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). That's right, it was the likes of Mario, Luigi, and the stupid dog from Duck Hunt that sparked my interest with all things digital. Since then I try and get my hands on every gadget I can, especially if it was "designed by Apple in California".
The web designer part came a bit later. I attended the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Arts and Technology for highschool. There we had a "graphics lab" which consisted of about 30 powerMac G3s. It was on one of those powerMacs, when I was playing with Photoshop, that I knew design was what I wanted to do. I took every design class they offered, including "Team Design" which was a group of five of us that got to collaborate and create designs for local businesses and events. Also, in my senior year I snagged an internship at Hall and Partners where I learned the ins and outs of print design. The "I work primarily on the web" part happened a few years later, in my junior year at James Madison University. I was majoring in Fine Art, with an emphasis in Graphic Design. One sunny morning I came into the web design classroom and the projection screen read, "Cascading Style Sheets" and under related info was, "csszengarden.com". I went home that day, hopped on my TiBook and went straight to csszengarden.com. I was in awe.
I call myself an adventurer. Unfortunately, I haven't done as much adventuring as I'd like to. What have I done? Most notable is my 2005 thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. That's right, in March of '05 I set off from Springer Mountain, Georgia headed North on the Appalachian Trail. Four months and 10 days later I finished my adventure atop Mt. Katahdin, Maine. It was the adventure of a lifetime, and I yearn for the next.. the PCT? I think so.
